Following in the footsteps of the Galaxy and Galaxy Spica, the latest addition to Samsung’s Android portfolio continues the solar system theme going under the name of the Samsung Galaxy S.
The i9000 Galaxy S sports a Super AMOLED touchscreen display (as debuted in the upcoming Samsung Wave) but ups the dimensions to a whopping 4.0 inches. For those unfamiliar with the new Super AMOLED technology Samsung have pioneered, it’s basically an advancement that is thinner than traditional AMOLED units allowing for the display to be closer to the surface which aids in the visual quality and responsiveness of the touchscreen. In short, it looks and feels fantastic.
Not content with adding a best in class display, Samsung have also thrown in the very latest version of Android, version 2.1 (or Eclair), and a speedy 1GHz processor to ensure everything runs smoothly. In keeping with the Google Nexus One, the Galaxy S boasts 7 customisable home screens that can be populated with all sorts of widgets, shortcuts and web feeds whilst four ever present icons sit at the bottom of the screen providing easy access to the most frequently used areas of the phone.
In addition to a stunning display and superb operating system, the Galaxy S also boasts a slew of multimedia options and a top notch camera. The Galaxy S includes 8GB of internal storage plus a memory card slot supporting up to a 32GB memory card, a 3.5mm audio jack, MP3 music player and DivX support. Additionally, the i9000 Galaxy S includes a 5.0 Megapixel camera with a whole host of extras such as face and smile detection plus the feature of the moment; 720p HD video capture! Throw in GPS, HSDPA and Wi-Fi and it’s clear that Samsung are gunning for the HTC Desire with the Galaxy S.
This phone is not compatible with the Telstra NextG network. If you are not sure which variation to choose, please read our guide to the different versions of the Samsung Galaxy S available.

Great Review by OSCAR
Performance Design Features Value I bought this phone after being a Nokia fan for years. Android leaves Symbian for dead! Great screen and easily adjustable settings. I particularly like tghe ability to load Remote Desktop programmes that actually work as I need to access remote security systems for my business. No longer need to lug around a laptop to do this. Great phone but could use a more powerful battery. As an oldie user (60+) I find this a great unit. (Posted on 28/03/11)

Wow Great Phone ... Sometimes a bit too smart Review by Sifty
Design Features Value Performance Had this phone for almost a month now and I love it. Not only does it do the usual stuff but some of the features of being able to sync gmail, facebook, myspace are great.
The added feature for me was when I learned that it could be set up as a wireless router. Goodbye home phone connection. Already saving me money and able to check things on the go!
I'm thoroughly happy with my Galaxy S, thankfully everyone has been so blindsided by the iPhone and because it wasn't available I ended up with the better phone!, The only complaint is no camera flash.
The only recommendation I have with all of these touchscreen phones buy a cover if you are going to put in your pocket. Saves scratches etc.
Oh yes, one annoying thing is how you answer the phone. You would hope this is easy, after missing a few calls I realised that you swipe the answer button to the right. Having worked out that I do not feel like an idiot anymore.
Somehow I have managed to delete the weather and finance screen. Hopefully I will find how to reinstate that in the user manual. Grrrr.
That brings me to the only thing with these smart phones. Often they are to smart for their own good when used but a not so smart person :) (Posted on 21/12/10) -
Overall am happy with this phone Review by cascan
Design Features Value Performance The phone is great. I love the camera options. My grandaughter especially loves the add me option. I cannot understand however why there is no flash, that to me should be a basic with modern phones. I also like the way you can file your photos in folders for easy viewing later. In comparison with an Iphone it matches up. It is easy to use, has everything you want in a phone. Battery life is not so good, as I need to charge it every night regardless of how much it has been used, despite the fact settings have been changed to mimimise usage. Initially there were problems with calls cutting out, but seems to have been rectified. The only reason I would change phones is the aforementioned lack of flash on the camera. That is extremely disappointing, and would never have purchased the phone had I have known. (Posted on 10/12/10)

Good phone ,easy to use Review by mel
Performance Design Features Value Had the i9000 for a few weeks now and generally happy with it , had some trouble with the headphone jack - didn't work properly . The phone is easy to use and adjust any settings , the display is great , bright and clear . The plastic back isn't good , gives it a tinny feel . A flash would be a good addition (Posted on 3/12/10)

i had an iphone4 too.. Review by nuttyone
Value Performance Design Features hi,
I am a apple geek and have had every model of iphone since it was released..so obviously i wanted the iphone 4 as a natural progression.
Well...i have had to return it with in 3 weeks.I am gutted...it is a piece of junk.Sorry apple( i have never had an issue with apple gear.truely.)
The problems for me. Facetime vanished the first time I synced up the phone with itunes.Applecare and our local apple dealer can not find how to reinstall it. Baffled is an understatement!
I had constant dropped calls, reception issues where I can hear the caller but they can not hear me. The worse thing was that I had typing issues in landscape mode..nothing I do makes it stop.Letters are randomly not working and the cursor thingee jumps around . My volume was also an issue on speaker phone and it distorts when I turn it to a louder volume.,
I had the samsung galaxy for 2 weeks, so had a chance to compare both on 3g and wifi.
I never thought I would prefer anything to apple, but I do.This phone rocks.
1. loads everything faster..period.
2. better sound and headphones. 5.1 surround sound and equiliser rock.also the free music downloading app you get on android.
3. BEST thing..anything you buy on android market, you have a refund button to use within 24 hours..apple never offers a refund like this!
4.easier ways to get into flight mode .just push the power on button for 3 seconds and select.no going into iphone, into settings and then turning on flight mode.Samsung is far more convenient..no unlocking of phone needed.
5.wifi and bluetooth also, easy one click on. literally.no settings to worry about. It also has a list of remembered networks always open for you.
6.SWYPE text is truely awesome.
7.I love that many games like angry birds are free on android.
8. can play movies, music in certain cars and on samsung videos etc.
9. videocalls on 3g and wifi!
etc...it really is a lovely bright, easy to use phone. I gave my iphone back and got the ipod touch as it has everything the iphone has, minus the crap phone part:P
i am not worried about the plastic back as many cases fix this. (Posted on 7/11/10) -
Good phone, lacking some basics for the oldies Review by Chally
Design Features Value Performance Got this phone over the iPhone. Unfortunately, it hasn't got some basics like Converter, the camera flash & it also comes with a dumbed down video. Compared to my Samsung Ultra touch, the video & pics are not up to the same standard. Why did they do this?
One VERY BIG problem, I can't run it on my MAC without loading software that may void warranty. What's the go Samsung...? it won't even recognise it for mass storage like the old ones do.
I can download the files to ty PC, but can't do much with the video, as yet. The iPhone just works lovely!
I listened to Mac haters and leaned towards this. Big mistake! Can't do anywhere near as much as I can with the iPhone.
All else works great. Very fast & great to use. Why can't the different companies have software to make them useful on different platforms. Just making it hard for some & will continue to chase potential customers away!
Not really happy Jan... :) (Posted on 3/10/10) -
After almost a month of use Review by skeezmoe
Design Features Value Performance Comments after using the phone for almost a month.
Design: The only negative is that it looks like the iPhone. As someone who is trying to stay away from the iPhone it took a lot to overcome this. The major points against the Desire was the memory and the graphics acceleration.
Features: As I said this phone oozes with hardware features. Dual camera, 8GB ram and graphics acceleration, a real geek phone.
Value: Good value vs the Desire but some hardware issues and performance prevent it from becoming a top phone. If the Samsung updates due this September fix this it will be an A1 phone.
Peformance: The only negative is the UI pause, I hope the Froyo update comes soon and fixes this.
Just one note: Mobi Citi staf said that they have not had anyone complain about GPS issues on this phone. DO NOT LISTEN to them, it does have issues if you plan on using the built in GPS alone for Turn By Turn nav. Lucky for me I have a GPS module and got Android GPS Provider from market. I now use CoPilot with it and it is just awesome. I hope Samsung release the GPS fix soon but otherwise the standalone GPS module is good enough. If you plan to use the built in GPS, it will only be okay for walking or running not for car navigation. (Posted on 7/09/10) -
Overall A Great Phone Review by Jimmy
Design Features Value Performance After a week of use im still thoroughly happy with my Galaxy S, and loving SWYPE feature on the keyboard. While there are some little cons about the phone (no camera flash, some pausing on UI for a split second) These are easily forgotten. The screen may not be what apple are about to release in their Iphone4, but it sure is impressive with its clarity and vibrance of colours, and i see no reason why the screen shouldn't be loved, i only regret that i didnt purchase a screen protector when i initially purchased the phone, its just too nice to scratch!
As mentioned earlier, there is a slight pause in the UI at times, but its so very minimal, you wouldn't notice it if you weren't looking for it. Currently there's a BETA/TEST release of Android 2.2 Froyo available, which only means an official full blown release of the Software is only a few weeks off, and current youtube videos of Galaxy S running the BETA release of Froyo looks promising, and quite quick. The operating system is great, coming from a first Gen. Omnia which ran Windows Mobile 6.1, to an Android OS, and just seems to be so much more user friendly, less fuss, and customisable the way you like.
So far battery life is good, after several full drain and full charge cycles, the battery life seems to have improved. Sound quality during calls and in general is good, sometimes seems a little low, although i think that may be the other persons phone. I have had several comments from friends saying they can hear me so clearly, at times not even noticing ive switched from the handset to speakerphone. So as a phone, it does what it is supposed to do, and have had no issues with loss of signal (sorry apple)
I could continue more on the phone, but hopefully what i have given so far is enough to help with anyone deciding to buy this phone. Overall great product, makes phone calls, sends text messages and more.
