Following in the footsteps of the Galaxy and Galaxy Spica, the latest addition to Samsung’s Android portfolio continues the solar system theme going under the name of the Samsung Galaxy S.
The i9000 Galaxy S sports a Super AMOLED touchscreen display (as debuted in the upcoming Samsung Wave) but ups the dimensions to a whopping 4.0 inches. For those unfamiliar with the new Super AMOLED technology Samsung have pioneered, it’s basically an advancement that is thinner than traditional AMOLED units allowing for the display to be closer to the surface which aids in the visual quality and responsiveness of the touchscreen. In short, it looks and feels fantastic.
Not content with adding a best in class display, Samsung have also thrown in the very latest version of Android, version 2.1 (or Eclair), and a speedy 1GHz processor to ensure everything runs smoothly. In keeping with the Google Nexus One, the Galaxy S boasts 7 customisable home screens that can be populated with all sorts of widgets, shortcuts and web feeds whilst four ever present icons sit at the bottom of the screen providing easy access to the most frequently used areas of the phone.
In addition to a stunning display and superb operating system, the Galaxy S also boasts a slew of multimedia options and a top notch camera. The Galaxy S includes 16GB of internal storage plus a memory card slot supporting up to a 32GB memory card, a 3.5mm audio jack, MP3 music player and DivX support. Additionally, the i9000 Galaxy S includes a 5.0 Megapixel camera with a whole host of extras such as face and smile detection plus the feature of the moment; 720p HD video capture! Throw in GPS, HSDPA and Wi-Fi and it’s clear that Samsung are gunning for the HTC Desire with the Galaxy S.
This phone is not compatible with the Telstra NextG network. If you are not sure which variation to choose, please read our guide to the different versions of the Samsung Galaxy S available at http://mobilephoneblog.com.au/2011/02/samsung-galaxy-s-which-one-do-i-need/

Good quality overall Review by sprocket2cog
Design Features Value Performance while the inbuilt Samsung UI the speed is a little slow, but the OLED screen is great outside and the black on the screen is blacker then other TFT screens.
the TV out is a great feature for playing games and going online.
battery life may be a little short but there is advanced battery control apps on the market to help with this. the gorrila glass front is highly scratch resistant and after a few weeks its still holding up well in my pocket all day with out any screen protector.
there has been complaints about the gps lock on this model but so far in melbourne i have had great locks down to about 20-50metres with out having to wait too long.

Wow. Review by Daniel
Design Features Value Performance Now ships with android 2.2 so can't comment on the older version.
An amazing phone. Love the feel of it. Interface seems easier to organise than my wifes iphone.
I'm quite impressed with the camera. My daughter arrived a day after the phone did so it has copped quite a workout.
There is an android application for everything. Don't know where to start really.
The few problems that I've noticed are:
Android proxy support is poor. Doesn't seem to work with an ipv6 proxy, android market ignores proxy settings, Samsung market uses the proxy address but ignores the port setting. Probably perfect for most home networks but probably a problem for most corporate networks.
While the multitasking is mostly pretty well done there is a problem with the music player while driving (bluetooth) with wifi scanning on. I get reasonably regular glitches. Turn off the wifi scanning and it is perfect (saves batteries anyway). (Posted on 28/01/11) -
Very happy with it Review by Woz
Value Performance Design Features With support for all media formats, ability to be easily accessed via windows explorer, 16 gig of onboard storage, and the recently released official froyo (android 2.2) update, this is a brilliant phone. It does need to be recharged every day with heavy use, a minor quibble that it is true of all current high-end phones. I have had it for a couple of months now and would definitely recommend it. It's like having a computer in your pocket Review by David
Design Features Value Performance My previous phone was a Samsung Omnia with WinMo 6.1. This new phone is a huge improvement over it in every way imaginable. Contrary to some reviewers, I'v found the user interface to be very easy to use and quite fast. Integrating my Google accounts (GMail, Calendar etc...) was straightforward. My one minor complaint is that the battery only lasts for about a day or so under heavy usage (e.g. twitter, web browsing etc...).
Prospective buyers should also be aware that Samsung have updated the firmware to Froyo (Android 2.2). With the update to Froyo, I'd recommend this phone to anybody. (Posted on 13/12/10) -
